Today I am reminded of what it was like growing up and going to school. Do you remember the first day of school each year? One of my daughters is in first grade this year. I can’t believe how quickly they grow up. Wasn’t she just a newborn? But I digress.
What I want to bring to your attention is the fact that I can be with my daughter as she gets ready to enter her class room on this special day. Why? Because I am an entrepreneur. As an entrepreneur – in my case a Real Estate Investor – no one schedules my time except me.
I can take my kids to school, help them with special projects, go with them on field trips and actually be there for them. I’m not slaving away at some 9-to-5 job where I’m pretty much meat in the seat. I did that plenty in my life. I prefer this.
I’m not sayin’ that the world doesn’t need a great many people willing to do the 9-to-5 grind. We in fact do need them. A lot of people are very happy with a steady job. I’m just not one of them.
The trick is to stay organized as an entrepreneur and business owner. In a job someone else has established the rules, regulations and how you need to get things done. As my own boss I get to do all of that. Good thing I’m following what David Allen says to do in his Getting Things Done program. I can’t believe how much improvement I’ve made in my organization, thought patterns, mindset and everything else that is actually helping me to create more time in my life for all sorts of things.
